Foreword

In an increasingly globalized world, Research, Technology and Innovation are vital to our economic and social progress. Scientific developments are essential for dealing with major societal challenges, for our wellbeing, health, safety, and wealth, now and in the future.

The Greek government’s vision is to radically restructure our country’s development model by placing emphasis on Education, Research & Innovation and linking research with entrepreneurship. Now, more than ever, it is urgent to look forward and to present and implement an optimistic, sustainable strategic plan to Greek society contributing to the recovery of Greece and restoring the credible image of our country in the international community.

Significant steps have been made already, but it is essential that we continue the drive to establish a truly knowledge based society, to build on our strengths, invest on our highly skilled human resources and create new opportunities for growth, jobs and social advancement.

These ambitious goals will only be achieved through continuous, targeted efforts and best use of accumulated knowledge and practices. In this light, I wish to express my sincere appreciation and gratitude to Prof. S. Krimizis and all members of the previous National Council for Research & Technology (2010-2013), distinguished scientists in the international research community, for all their dedicated efforts during their term.

I welcome this document as a significant contribution to the National Strategy for Research, Technology and Innovation.

The Secretary General for Research & Technology

Dr Christos Vasilakos
