Founded in 2000, the Centre for Research and Technology Hellas is one of the leading centers in Greece and listed among the top - 20 European Union institutions with the highest participation in competitive research grants. It is a legal entity governed by private law with non-profit status supervised by the General Secretariat for Research and Technology of the Greek Ministry of Education, Research and Religious Affairs. Its total workforce consists of more than 700 employees. The majority of them are highly-qualified scientists. Its head offices are located in Thermi - Thessaloniki, in an area of approximately 30.000 m². Additional CERTH branches exist in Athens, Volos, Larisa, Trikala and Ptolemaida.

CERTH is a prominent player in the Global Research Area with important scientific and technological achievements in the fields of Sustainable and Clean Energy, Environmental Technologies, Chemical and biochemical Processes, New Functional Materials, Informatics, Telematics, Telecommunications, Smart Sustainable Mobility, Transport Safety, Agri-biotechnology, Health Translational Research, Informatics for Big  Biodata, Bio-economy, Agri-technology, Safety and Security as well as several cross-disciplinary scientific areas.

It is involved in setting up collaborative projects with many partners around the world participating successfully in more than 380 per year financed by the European Union (EU), leading industries from USA, Japan and Europe and the Greek Government until today. Its research results (more than 350 publications/year) have significant scientific impact (about 7.100 heterocitations/year). CERTH is the first Greek research institution recognized by the European Union that respects the principles of the “Charter for Researchers and the Code of Contact for the Recruitment of Researchers”.
