Centre for Nuclear Research, Demokritos

Founded in 1961 as a Centre for Nuclear Research, Demokritos is today the largest multidisciplinary Research Centre of Greece with approximately 190 Researchers in tenured and tenure-track positions and over 500 Research Personnel working in projects funded mainly by grants from State Funds, the European Union and Private Industries.

Demokritos boasts a strong presence in international research.  The Centre’s bibliometric profile recorded by the National Documentation Centre for 2012-2016 presents almost 2.600 publications and 30.200 citations, which places it first among all Greek Research Centers. Demokritos was placed in the top-50 Research Institutions in the EU FP7 something that is expected to repeat for HORIZON 2020. Demokritos coordinates three National Research Infrastructures and participates in another eight.  It also operates quality-certified laboratories offering specialized measurements and testing for the Environment, Energy and the National Network for Precision Medicine.

Within the national agenda for a unified higher-education – research sector, Demokritos participates in accredited Graduate Programs in collaboration with University Departments in Greece and abroad. Today Doctoral students at the Centre benefit from a multidisciplinary research environment and unique programs such as the Stavros Niarchos Industrial Fellowships. Science communication and outreach activities are designed aiming towards young people in the primary and secondary educational levels as well as “open-doors” and exhibition events aiming at adults with an interest in Science and Technology.

Highly committed to supporting innovation and technology-driven entrepreneurship Demokritos is maintaining a dense portfolio of national and international patents.  The creation of spin-offs and spin-outs is strongly encouraged. Demokritos has adopted business-friendly policies that substantially support corporate growth, especially in the early, high-risk period in a company’s life.  In the Demokritos’ campus, “Lefkippos”, the Technology Park of Attica serves as a pole of attraction for approximately thirty start-up companies and high-technology SMEs, which are in a continuous, dynamic interaction with the Research Community of the Centre.

The Centre consists of five independent Institutes focusing on different scientific fields:
