Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH)

The Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) was founded in 1983 and is one of the largest research centers in Greece with well organized facilities, highly qualified personnel and a reputation as a top-level research institution worldwide.

FORTH focuses on interdisciplinary research and innovation activities on areas of major scientific, social, and economic interest, such as Microelectronics, Lasers, Materials, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Biotechnology, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Robotics, Telecommunications, Applied and Computational Mathematics, Chemical Engineering Sciences, Human and Social Sciences.

FORTH conducts targeted scientific research on strategic sectors of high added value and cooperates tightly with Academic and Research Foundations in Greece and abroad. It pays special attention to educating and training young scientists such as graduate students and postdocs. It has contributed significantly to the scientific, societal and economic development of the Regions where its Institutes are based. Today, FORTH is one of the main actors in the Smart Specialization Strategy design and implementation in Greece.

  • Ranks 1st, by the European Commission, among all Greek Research Centers and Universities
  • Was classified together with UoC, as 1st in the Nature INDEX, among the top Research Institutions in Greece.
  • FORTH’s researchers have received 24 ERC Grants, 82 Marie-Curie Excellence Awards and numerous international distinctions.
  • FORTH has been designated a European Research Facility in the Laser, Polymer, Nanomaterial and Cultural Heritage sectors.
  • Was awarded the 1st AXA Chair Grant in Greece, in Epigenetics.
  • Has established the 1st Ancient DNA Analysis Lab in Greece (one of the few in Europe).
  • Has established the Genomics Analysis Center with applications on Agrifood sector, on Cultural Heritage and on Biomedicine. Establishment of a Biomedical Imaging Unit equipped with PET/CT (unique in Crete), in collaboration with the Medical School of the University of Crete and the University Hospital of Crete.
  • Runs the Ambient Intelligence (AmI) Programme, a long term horizontal interdisciplinary RTD Programme aiming to develop and apply pioneering human-centric AmI technologies and Smart Environments.
  • Has established the FORTH Graphene Centre which is the main pillar for graphene research in Greece and actively participates in the Graphene FLAGSHIP (selected as Future and Emerging Technology by the European Commission).
  • FORTH researchers participate in 221 competitive projects with a budget of 96.4 M€ (Nov. 2017).
  • Over 100 patents filed, 54 are currently active.
