Biomedical Sciences Research Center "Alexander Fleming" – BSRC Fleming

Biomedical Sciences Research Center ‘Alexander Fleming’ – BSRC Fleming

BSRC Fleming is a top-ranked Greek non-profit research organisation focusing on scientific and technological excellence, training and innovation in biomedical sciences. The Center was established in 1998, and operates under the supervision of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT) of the Hellenic Ministry of Education. Competitive funding each year amounts to 75-85% of the total budget of the Center, an achievement that underlies Fleming's strategic prioritization of research and innovation, which falls tightly within Europe 2020 priorities.  In a 2014 evaluation by an international  scientific committee organized by GSRT, Fleming was ranked first among Greek Research Centers active in biomedical sciences.

The Center has gained international recognition for its pioneering research towards understanding the molecular and cellular basis of human diseases such as autoimmune diseases, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, osteoporosis, pulmonary fibrosis and others, and the development of new approaches for their diagnosis and treatment. Fleming currently hosts 15 highly competitive research teams active in the areas of functional genomics and proteomics, molecular and cellular immunology, animal models of human disease, transcriptional and post-transcriptional mechanisms of gene regulation, epigenetics, DNA repair, mechanisms of learning and memory, and ECM biology. The Center is internationally recognized for its projects in translational research on pathway, target and biomarker identification and validation, preclinical evaluation of therapeutics in animal models and novel drug development and screening.

Fleming has established state-of-the-art facilities that offer services for translational research to the Center internally, but also to researchers and companies in Greece and abroad. These include a state of the art animal house, a Transgenesis unit, a Cryopreservation and Rederivation Unit,  a Flow Cytometry Unit, a Histopathology Lab, an Advanced Imaging Unit, a microCT Unit, a Genomics Unit, a Proteomics Unit, as well as an Innovation and Enterprise Unit (IEU), which acts as a one stop shop for all aspects of the successful exploitation of inventions and technologies arising from Fleming research activities. Furthermore, the Center coordinates the national nodes of two ESFRI infrastructures, Infrafrontier-GR/Phenotypos and ELIXIR-GR, thus playing a key role in implementing the long term strategic development plans of Greece and the EC for Research and innovation.

In 2006, Fleming established the spin-off company Biomedcode Hellas SA (www.biomedcode.com), a CRO company providing full preclinical drug evaluation services to small and large pharmaceutical companies worldwide, commercialising proprietary animal models of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Key performance indicators of the Center’s successful development over the last 15 years, include:

  • Over 450 publications (1999-2017) in peer-reviewed journals (average Impact Factor 7)
  • 11 patent applications in translational research
  • More than 130 competitive research grants over the last 15 years from national, European and international sources (EU, HFSP, NIH and others) amounting to 53M€ (i.e. 250.000€ per researcher per year)
  • Three members of staff elected to the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)
  • 4 ERC grant holders(2 Advanced and 2 Starting)
  • Coordination of 5 EC projects including the FP6 MUGEN Network of Excellence
  • Key participation in the large-scale European Research Infrastructure project INFRAFRONTIER, founding member of InfrafrontierGmbH and full membership to the European Mouse Mutant Archive (EMMA) since 2009
  • A strong record in training students (participation in 9 EC training networks), co-coordination of the International MSc Program in “Molecular Biomedicine” with the Medical School of Athens
