History
The Centre started its operation in 1959 as an independent division of the public sector with the name of Nuclear Research Centre “Demokritos”. In 1985 it was renamed and given self-governing jurisdiction under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology. The operation of the Centre is governed by: the Laws 1514/85 (Development of scientific and technological research) and 2919/01 (From science and technology to production), the Presidential Decrees 71/87 (The operation of NCSR “Demokritos”) and 17/01 (Financial support of spin off companies), the Ministerial Decree 4909/95 (Internal regulations of NCSR “Demokritos”).

The National Centre for Scientific Research “Demokritos” is a medium size, by international standards, multidisciplinary research Centre with up to date significant growth in the fields of science and technology. The Centre has at its disposal important laboratory facilities, many of which are unique in Greece. The NCSR “Demokritos” spreads over a 600.000 m2 campus and has a useful surface area of 45.000 m2. It employs 1050 people, of whom 450 under external research contracts from competitive programs.
