Radiation under control!

The Greek Atomic Energy Commission (EEAE) is the national regulatory authority competent for the control, regulation and supervision of the nuclear energy, nuclear technology, radiological and nuclear safety and radiation protection fields.

It is a technology body with a regulatory role, operating under a legal-person-of-public-law status and enjoying full financial and administrative autonomy. It is subject to the authority and supervision of the Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs.

It is responsible for:

  • Proposing legislation and issuing regulations. It issues regulatory acts and proposes legislation, drafting the relevant legislative texts (bills, presidential decrees, ministerial decisions). It drafts and proposes the required legislation for transposing EURATOM directives into national law.
  • Performing inspections and licensing facilities/applications. It performs radiation protection and safe operation monitoring in 2.500 medical, industrial and other radiation applications laboratories, as well as measurements of electromagnetic field levels in the environment for all types of antenna base stations (e.g. thousands of cell phone antennas).
  • Monitoring occupationally exposed workers. It performs on monthly basis individual monitoring for 11.000 occupationally exposed workers.
  • Monitoring environment radiation levels. It co-ordinates the national environment radiation control programme and operates a telemetric system for monitoring radiation levels in the atmosphere. It has the necessary infrastructure and expertise to conduct specialised radiation detection analysis in environmental samples, products, materials, etc., and provides radon measurement services.
  • Responding to emergency situations. It provides operational and advisory support in emergency situations with a radiological/nuclear component.
  • Calibrating radiation measurement instruments. It ensures calibration of ionising radiation measurement instruments.
  • Education and training. It has been recognized as the IAEA Regional Training Centre (language: English) in Europe and Central Asia for radiation, transport and waste safety.
  • Research and development. Research is an integral part of EEAE activities, its results supporting operation and enhancing training and the provision of scientific incentives to the EEAE staff. The research activity is reflected in its participation in research programmes and the number of publications in scientific journals and conferences.
  • International representation. It participates in European and international institutions in its fields of responsibility.
  • Public information. It provides information and advice to State authorities and the public.
